The 7th Grade Percussion Ensemble class is a part of Powhatan
Junior High School Bands and is under the direction of Mr. Neil Landini.
Purpose:
This class is for second year percussionists or those who can audition in,
meeting or exceeding the 1st Year Performing Standards for Percussion. As an
extension of the 7th grade concert band, 7th Grade Percussion Ensemble will be an intensive
beginning study of the percussive arts. Literature will consist of concert
band parts as well as specialized concert percussion literature suitable for the
skill level of the class. Students will be able to display understanding of
selected PAS rudiments, all 12 major and
selected minor scales and arpeggios as well as the ability
to count and play in common meters. Also, each student will display knowledge of
techniques of a variety of percussion instruments as well as an intermediate
ability on at least one of these. Percussion ensemble students are expected to
master all concert music, as well as participate in classroom percussion
performances required as a part of the class grade. Students taking this class
are highly encouraged to supplement their experience by participating in
Junior indoor percussion and at the end of the year, sign to participate in
marching band as an 8th grader.Materials:
The 7th grade percussion class uses the Kjos Standard of Excellence Book
2 method books. Percussionists are required to have the Snare and Mallet
Percussion, Timpani and Auxiliary, and Music Theory and History books. In
addition, this class uses a variety of handouts and exercises to continue musical and
technical development.
In addition, percussion
students are required to purchase the
Innovative Percussion FP-3 mallet bag to provide for their mallet needs, the
Vic Firth Heavy Hitter
Stockpad practice pad and one pair of
