The 8th Grade Percussion is a part of Powhatan Junior High School Bands and is
under the direction of Mr. Neil Landini.
Purpose:
This class is for third year percussionists or those who can audition in,
meeting or exceeding the 2nd Year Performing Standards for Percussion.
As an
extension of the 8th grade concert band, 8th grade Percussion will be an
intensive intermediate study of the percussive arts. Literature will consist of
concert band parts as well as specialized concert percussion literature suitable
for the skill level of the class. Students will be able to display competency
of all 40 PAS rudiments, all major and selected minor scales and arpeggios as
well as the ability to count and play in most meters. Also, each student should
display knowledge of techniques of a variety of percussion instruments as well
as an intermediate ability on at least one of these. Percussion ensemble
students are expected to master all concert music, as well as participate in
classroom percussion performances required as a part of the class grade.
Students taking this class are highly encouraged to supplement their experience
by participating in marching band and indoor percussion.

Materials:
This class uses the Kjos
Standard of
Excellence Book 3 method books: Drums and Mallet Percussion, Timpani and
Auxiliary Percussion, Theory and Music History. In addition, percussion
students are required to purchase the
Innovative Percussion FP-3 mallet bag to provide for their mallet needs. All of which are available at Just Drums in Midlothian, VA or online at www.JustDrumsOnline.com.
